Why I Love It When Four-Legged Family Members Join the Ceremony
If you've spent any time getting to know me, you'll probably have heard me mention Norman.
Norman is my miniature wire-haired dachshund, chief supervisor of absolutely everything, and a much-loved member of our family. Like many pet owners, I don't really think of him as "just a dog", he's part of our story.
That's one of the reasons I absolutely love seeing pets included in ceremonies.
Whether it's a dog proudly carrying the rings down the aisle, a horse watching from a nearby field, or a beloved family pet simply being present for the day, animals have a wonderful way of bringing warmth, personality and a little unpredictability to a ceremony.
And let's be honest, some of the most memorable moments happen when a dog decides to wander over for an unexpected cuddle or steals a little bit of the spotlight!
The thing is, ceremonies are about celebrating the people, relationships and experiences that make your story unique. For many of us, our pets have been there through life's biggest moments, first homes, new babies, adventures, challenges and everyday memories. They deserve their place in the story too.
As a celebrant, I love helping couples and families find meaningful ways to include their furry companions, whether that's in a wedding, naming ceremony, vow renewal or even a celebration of life.
After all, family doesn't always walk on two legs.
And if Norman had his way, he'd probably insist on being invited to every ceremony I conduct.
Thankfully, I haven't let him take over the business... yet. ♡
